Archie Thompson re-signs for two more years

Archie Thompson has re-signed with the Melbourne Victory for another two years.

Archie has been the club marquee since its inaugural campaign and with him re-signing today, it seems he may continue to be the marquee for the next two years.

As with most things, some fans are happy with the news, while others aren’t quite so pleased. Many don’t consider Archie to be worthy of the marquee role, preferring to use the money to attract a bigger name. But it’s worth remembering that Archie remains the league’s top scorer. And he’s impressive off-the-bench performance against the Newcastle Jets last week was another reminder that Archie, on a good day, is a powerful asset to have on your team.

well eric in response to ur piece, i am a person who did not think archie is marquee worth, but im not doubting his ability, as shown in the newcastle game.

on the flipside it would be a better move to pay archie a marquee wage, which i would expect is higher than a salary cap position but also less than certain marquee flops such as Jardel and Juniho (who have only been at the club 1 season)… i would rather have a decent marquee than an overage/injury prone/ has-been superstar who is only at my club for one year.

As long as archie keeps performing i dont have a problem with his payroll status at the victory

I am one of those who think Archie is overated, often very lazy on the park, tries to be too clever sometimes and drops his head when things dont go well. Having said that, when he is on his game, chasing hard and playing with the team instead of playing solo he better than any forward in the league. On that basis I accept his marquee status at Victory and I am glad he re-signed because i think the trio of Archie, Danny and Ney are the best forward set-up in the league.

Forget about 1 year marquee deals for overage ex-superstars. You cant build a team around a 1 year fly-in looking to boost their superannuation funds. If it wasnt Archie as marquee, the only other marquee i would like to see is a major overseas player on an extended 2-3 season contract like a Viduka or a Bresciano but only while they are still playing first class football.

Excellent news. He deserves our marquee status, the kids love him. He is an excellent face for the promotion of our club. He’s a very nice guy too, I have run in to him at the supermarket a few times as he lives near me and he is always willing to have a chat and has a lot of time for his fans. Hopefully others will follow and re-sign, especially Carlos.

I think Archie has proved himself a really good marquee actually. I can’t think of a more successful marquee signing in the A-league to be quite honest. Archie has often excited the crowd with his skills (or at least attempts), regularly scored for us when we needed him to and above all, he’s been a great ambassador for the club. Astri, you make a great point about his popularity with the kids and I think that is actually a really important part of being a marquee.

Great to hear he’s re-signed if you ask me :)

Archie is so important to the Victory. Now that he is being used in more of a free role rather than an out and out striker, his value to the set up will only increase. He deserves to be our marque player, and I think he has been ,without doubt, the most valuable marque player over the 3 and a bit seasons.
